A monumental artifact of the Marwari trade era, this trunk is hand-carved from dense, old-growth Rosewood. Its architectural frame is reinforced with hand-etched brass cladding, showcasing the exceptional metal-smithing of Rajasthan. This heavy-gauge piece serves as a profound statement of history and structural permanence.

Features

  • Architectural Brass Overlay: Full-perimeter brass fretwork featuring deep-relief floral etching.
  • Old-Growth Rosewood: Extraordinary grain density and weight, salvaged and restored for modern use.
  • Hand-Beaten Medallions: Strategic brass inlays on the lid and face providing structural reinforcement and visual focus.
  • Oversized Iron & Brass Hinges: Heavy-duty internal hardware designed for a lifetime of operation.

Our 19th C. Marwari Trunk is a study in the "Fortress Style" of colonial-era India. These chests were the primary security vaults for merchant families, engineered to protect valuables through the weight of the timber and the strength of the metal cladding. The brass-work is a classic example of "Jali" patterns—geometric and floral repetitions that echo the stone-carved screens of Jaipur’s palaces. Every etched leaf and vine is a historical narrative of a craft that is rapidly disappearing. By repurposing this form, we provide an investment-grade piece that brings the gravity of 19th-century craftsmanship into the contemporary gallery-style home.

Style Details Historicist / Luxury Industrial. The design is defined by the high-contrast tension between the dark, almost-black Rosewood and the oxidized glow of the hand-worked brass.

Craftsmanship Details Executing this piece requires a master "Tarkashi" artisan. The brass must be heated and cooled repeatedly to allow it to be pinned flush against the hardwood without buckling. The finishing involves a proprietary "Antique Aging" process, where the brass is slightly darkened to avoid a high-polish look, and the wood is treated with charcoal-infused oils to emphasize its historic origin.

Wood Quality and Finish Sourced from superior, slow-growth Rosewood, this trunk possesses a structural hardness comparable to stone. The finish is a hand-rubbed, low-luster wax that feels organic and raw.

Suggestions for Incorporation Anchor a minimalist, modern lounge with this trunk as a coffee table, or utilize it as a singular, sculptural element in a high-ceilinged study.
